Somali Refugee Tipped for Starmer’s Seat

Camden Council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali is emerging as Labour’s frontrunner to replace Sir Keir Starmer in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, according to GB News. The former Prime Minister announced his departure from the seat just before the end of the summer recess.

Sagal Abdi-Wali, who leads Camden Council, is heavily tipped to secure the Labour nomination for the north London constituency. Ms Abdi-Wali arrived in the United Kingdom as a child refugee from Somalia in the early 1990s after her family fled civil war and famine.

Having previously served as chairwoman of Sir Keir Starmer’s Constituency Labour Party, she was first elected as a Labour councillor in 2022. She subsequently took over the leadership of Camden Council following the local elections, pledging to work for social justice.
