Rather than launching numerous small boats from northern beaches heavily patrolled by French police, traffickers are now packing record numbers of asylum seekers onto massive, overcrowded vessels from western coastal points.

To counter this operational shift, the UK and France are ramping up enforcement measures. Plans include deploying a surge team of 45 officers to French western beaches, expanding a specialist intelligence and judicial unit from 18 to 30 officers, and introducing a new 75-strong taskforce in northern France, bringing total deployed personnel to nearly 1,050.
