Sadiq Khan Convicted of Failing to Tax Car He Does Not Own

The Mayor of London has been convicted and fined for failing to tax a 24-year-old Nissan Micra in a private court hearing, according to The Telegraph. City Hall officials insist the vehicle belongs to neither the Mayor nor Transport for London.

Lord Khan of Tooting was found guilty in his absence last month by a magistrate sitting in a private hearing of the Single Justice Procedure in Herefordshire. Court documents reveal he was ordered to pay a £220 fine, £85 in costs, and a £35.84 bill for unpaid vehicle tax. The prosecution was brought by the DVLA after annual tax on the blue Nissan Micra ran out in September last year.

Court records show that DVLA warning letters regarding the unpaid tax were sent to Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, Bar & Rooftop in east London, rather than the nearby TfL offices at Endeavour Square. City Hall officials confirmed they are actively reviewing the case and investigating how the prosecution proceeded without a formal plea being entered.

The controversy follows earlier protests from motorists who threatened to register vehicles in the Mayor’s name to make him liable for the daily Ulez charge after the zone was expanded across London. Lord Khan, who serves as chairman of TfL, now faces the prospect of appearing in court personally to make a statutory declaration and overturn the conviction.

Legal avenues remain open for the case to be reopened if it can be demonstrated that the Mayor was wrongly accused. Alternatively, the DVLA could apply to the court to reopen proceedings. Officials have indicated that inquiries into the unusual circumstances surrounding the vehicle registration records are ongoing.
