Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Reform UK Shadow Chancellor Robert Jenrick sat down with pensioners in Redcar yesterday and made a clear pledge: their financial security will be protected. The pair walked into O’Grady’s Hotel, shared tea, sandwiches, scones and Reform-branded cupcakes, then stood with “Protecting Your Pension” placards. This was no photo opportunity. It was a direct conversation with people who have worked hard and now face the cost of keeping the lights on.

Farage told The Northern Echo the visit let him hear straight from pensioners and those nearing retirement about the triple lock row. “We have been speaking to pensioners and soon-to-be pensioners just to get their perception on this whole, ‘Oh the old get everything and the young get nothing’ debate – and I do accept that it is tough for young people,” he said. Jenrick was equally firm. “We need to make sure that we protect older people in the last decades of their lives and give them the financial security that they deserve,” he stated.

Talk quickly turned to the empty factories and lost livelihoods that once defined the area. Redcar carries a proud history of steelmaking and chemical manufacturing. Those jobs have gone. Farage rejected the claim that green projects would fill the gap. Pointing to nearby wind farms he said: “It produces a few jobs, but nothing compared to the jobs that are gone.”

He laid the numbers bare. Industrial energy prices here stand eight times higher than in America and twelve times higher than in China. “Unless we get that right, areas like this are not going to see big numbers of good jobs coming back.” That single fact explains why recovery stays out of reach for communities that built Britain’s industrial strength.

Farage saved his sharpest words for the Conservatives. He accused them of offering pretend solutions to problems they created themselves by writing Net Zero into law. On their chances in Redcar he was blunt: “Even though the Tories won here in Redcar in 2019, they’ve got no chance next time.” The message from the hotel tables was simple and hard. Protect the pensions. Cut the energy costs that are strangling the North East. Anything less leaves older residents exposed and the next generation without proper work.
