Reform UK is taking the gloves off in North West Essex. The party will run a US-style primary to choose a candidate whose sole job is to unseat Kemi Badenoch from the Conservative seat she holds. Ordinary constituents get a vote, whether or not they carry a Reform membership card. That is the plain fact now on the table.

The Independent sets out the plan. Three names will first be selected by the local Reform branch. Those finalists then go before the wider public in the seat. A special hustings will be chaired by Nigel Farage himself. Mrs Badenoch won the constituency in 2024 with a majority of 2,610. The seat is already marked as a prime Reform target at the next general election.

Local reality has already shifted. In May’s local elections Reform wrestled control of Essex County Council from the Conservatives after twenty-five years of unbroken rule. That result was no accident. Voters in the county have shown they are ready to move on from the old order. The primary simply extends that choice to the parliamentary contest.

A Reform UK spokesman put it without varnish: “The people of North West Essex will be able to select a candidate that will actually show up for the area and form part of the next Government. Reform UK members will be out in droves every day until the election showing that only Reform can win in this seat and beat Labour at the next election.” The message is direct. Delivery and presence matter more than labels.

This is how the party intends to fight. Open the selection, put the candidates in front of the people who live there, and let them decide who stands the best chance of winning. No closed lists. No quiet stitch-ups. Farage chairs the hustings so the process stays visible. The voters of North West Essex get the final say on who carries the Reform banner against Badenoch.

The contest is set. Reform is organising early, inviting the whole constituency in, and stating outright that it means to take the seat and form part of the next government. That is the challenge now facing the Conservative leader on her own ground.
