Andy Burnham has been dealt a major Brexit blow as a bombshell poll tears apart his plan to rejoin the European Union.

A huge majority of Daily Express readers reject Andy Burnham’s shock Brexit reset proposal after the Prime Minister reignited the Brexit debate at Labour conference in Liverpool.

The Prime Minister promised in his first Labour Party conference speech as leader to set out options on the country’s ties to Brussels around the time of a UK-EU summit later this year. He later acknowledged this could include an option to go all the way and rejoin the bloc if that is what public opinion favoured.

Express readers were asked whether they favour such a move, with an overwhelming 88 per cent of 6,624 poll respondents saying no.

Those in favour of a reversal made up 12 per cent (773) of the total, with 42 respondents saying they did not know if the UK should reverse Brexit or not.

According to reports, Express readers were asked whether they favour such a move, with an overwhelming 88 per cent saying no, dealing a huge blow to Burnham’s EU plan.

The results come as Burnham’s political opponents point out a glaring error in the Prime Minister’s proposal.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the Labour leader’s positions on Brussels and devolution were at odds. He told reporters in Doncaster: “This is the pro-devolution prime minister. To even consider rejoining the single market, the customs union, let alone the European Union itself, is the opposite of devolution.”

“[It is] a massive transfer of huge powers up to an authority, whereby there is nothing Parliament could do to change any of it. So I find the whole thing totally contradictory.”

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch insisted rejoining the EU would not solve all the UK’s problems and accused Burnham of reigniting the debate as a distraction.

She said: “All of these things are being discussed by people who did not pay attention to what happened when we had the negotiations last time. We are not going to get the same terms that we had. Does anybody really believe Andy Burnham is going to get Margaret Thatcher’s rebate back? This is all a distraction. We need to focus on sorting our economy out.”

The backlash comes after Burnham told broadcasters a second Brexit referendum is an option and set out four options to rejoin the EU and how likely they are – including a customs union, single market, associate membership, and going all the way to full membership.

Polling is mixed. While the Express poll of 6,624 shows 88 per cent oppose reversal, other national polling shows 59 per cent in favour of rejoining the EU with 32 per cent against. A YouGov poll on 2 and 3 June 2026 found 55 per cent supported Britain returning to the EU, showing how divided the country remains.

But for Express readers, the message is clear – they do not want to reverse Brexit.

  1. Don’t believe the YouGov poll. It is a paid membership. People get paid for taking part in the polls and the membership is international not just British. So you could have people in France and Germany saying wether we should rejoin. Madness.
Other polls are paid the same thats why they normally cap the participants to 1 – 2000. They wouldn’t want to pay 10,000 people would they. Some of the polls you see are also run out of America so how truthful are they?
