Prime Minister Andy Burnham has confirmed the UK could REJOIN the EU in a major Brexit U-turn just 125 days after promising voters he would not.
The Prime Minister, who promised voters in Brexit-backing Makerfield he would not try to return Britain to the EU in May, has now told GB News rejoining the bloc is one of the options he is considering for Britain’s long-term relationship with Brussels.
Speaking to the People’s Channel, Burnham said: “We look at all options. The speech was about deciding the long-term direction for this country. Where do we want to be in 10 years’ time?”
According to GB News, Mr Burnham opened the door to reopening the Brexit debate after refusing to rule out making European Union membership a future manifesto commitment. Original reporting via GB News Politics.
On Wednesday, Burnham told the BBC that Britain should consider options for its future relationship with the European Union, including ultimately rejoining the bloc, saying Brexit had “done more harm than good”.
The Prime Minister’s comments came just 125 days after he explicitly said he would not try to return Britain to the EU. Labour’s 2024 manifesto also ruled out returning to the EU, single market or customs union.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Andy Burnham Brexit U-Turn
- Andy Burnham says rejoining EU among options for UK future relationship
- Options include customs union, single market, and full EU membership
- Decision to be set out around UK-EU summit later this year
- Labour split as Graham Stringer and Jonathan Reynolds warn against rejoining
Graham Stringer, who is the last pro-Brexit Labour MP, told GB News: “Any talk about going back in now is just signalling to voters who support the EU, but it’s not real politics.”
Labour’s 2024 manifesto ruled out returning to the EU, single market or customs union and restoring freedom of movement. The new position threatens to spark a Brexit civil war inside Labour.
YouGov polling in June found 55 per cent of Britons now support Britain rejoining the EU, an inversion of the 52 per cent that voted leave in 2016. However, only 23 per cent of people who voted for Brexit said they would now support rejoining.
Burnham said: “My job is to secure the best interests of this country. The decade we’ve just been through has not been good enough. I don’t think Brexit has helped us.”

Another betrayal, yet more lies. We have left. The EU is on it’s last legs and has only just mentioned a United States of Europe again, with member states not having a say or veto in some instances. Why would any sane nation join up to this corrupt failed experiment.
