Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has claimed that Brexit caused the small boat migrant crisis, calling on the government to join the EU migration pact. The remarks came during a round of interviews with BBC local radio stations ahead of his party’s annual conference.
Speaking to broadcasters, Sir Ed argued that small boat crossings were a direct consequence of leaving the European Union and accused the Conservatives and Reform UK of exploiting the issue. According to BBC Politics, he stated that the country did not face this problem before Brexit.
We didn’t have the small boats problem before Brexit. It’s been caused by the Conservatives… caused by Nigel Farage. They should hang their heads in shame. And what really irritates me, is they exploit it for their own political benefit. And I think that’s really wrong.

To tackle the crossings, Sir Ed is urging Downing Street to open negotiations with the EU Commission to participate in its migration and asylum pact. He claimed the arrangement would provide a legal deterrent by allowing migrants to be returned to the European state they departed from.

Latest figures indicate that small boat arrivals have fallen by forty-four percent under the current Labour administration, alongside an eight percent increase in deportations. However, Sir Ed insisted that current measures do not go far enough and require deeper international cooperation.
Looking toward the party’s autumn gathering, Sir Ed also addressed the debate surrounding political donations following recent multi-million-pound contributions to rival parties. He reiterated his lifelong support for donation caps, noting that previous attempts to legislate failed during the coalition years due to opposition from larger parties.

Funny before Brexit I remember them coming over in boats and back of lorries …. not as many i give you that but it still happened and just before Brexit Germany’s chancellor Merkal invited them to Europe, i remember saying as first boats came over from Turkey, this is going to end bad… and dear OLD Nigel suddenly has his invasion poster, oh how right he was
