Mayor Sadiq Khan surprised the London Assembly by responding to Green Party leader Zack Polanski in Urdu, according to GB News reports. The unexpected exchange followed Mr Polanski’s recent campaign video.
During a heated session at City Hall, the capital’s mayor addressed Mr Polanski directly in Urdu during Mayor’s Question Time. The intervention came after the Green leader questioned the administration on data centres and clean energy supplies.
The exchange drew immediate attention across the chamber, referencing a viral clip where Mr Polanski spoke Urdu while campaigning for a parliamentary seat. According to a translation provided by the mayor’s office, Lord Khan stated: “Peace be upon you. I was worried that you would ask the question in Urdu, but you asked your question in English.”
Lord Khan further remarked: “I’ll be spending time in Holborn and St Pancras this week and I’m going to be there. Maybe we will meet there.” Mr Polanski appeared unamused by the response, arguing that the detour wasted valuable time intended for debating pressing environmental challenges facing the capital.
