Canada has been invited to become the European Union’s first associate member under an unprecedented proposal unveiled by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. GB News reports that the move follows Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s push for a unique alliance with Brussels.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen used her address at the European Parliament in Strasbourg to declare that Brussels wants to bring its relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. Addressing lawmakers with Mr Carney seated in the front row, Mrs von der Leyen announced her intention to open the door for Canada to secure associate membership status.
According to GB News, Mrs von der Leyen told the assembly: “I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU.”
The surprise overture comes as Ottawa seeks to forge stronger economic and strategic alliances away from North America. Mr Carney earlier stated that Canada is pursuing a unique partnership with European capitals, focusing on vital sectors including technology, critical minerals, and defence cooperation.
