More than half of British voters believe Sir Keir Starmer should resign as Prime Minister, according to a new Opinium survey. This stark finding comes as potential successor Andy Burnham’s popularity has also begun to decline, despite his recent by-election victory.

The latest Opinium poll reveals a significant public demand for a change in leadership, with 55 per cent of respondents stating Sir Keir should step down. This widespread dissatisfaction casts a long shadow over the current Labour government.

The survey’s results underscore a growing crisis of confidence in Downing Street, raising serious questions about the Labour leader’s future and the stability of the government.

The Public’s Verdict on Starmer’s Leadership

The Opinium survey found that a decisive 55 per cent of the public believe Sir Keir Starmer should quit as Labour leader and leave Downing Street. In stark contrast, only 25 per cent of respondents think he should remain in post and continue to lead the country.

This overwhelming sentiment against Sir Keir’s continued leadership highlights a profound disconnect between the Prime Minister and the British electorate. His approval rating remains unchanged at a net -42, a figure that speaks volumes about public disillusionment.

Burnham’s Fading Momentum

Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield has transformed the political narrative and given him the chance to ride a wave of Keir Starmer’s unpopularity. However, our polling suggests before the Makerfield result was announced that Labour voters still wanted Starmer to contest any leadership race and had little appetite for an immediate leadership election.

While Andy Burnham is the only potential Labour successor viewed more positively than negatively, with a net acceptability score of +8, his standing has fallen by 12 points since May. This represents the largest decline among Sir Keir’s possible replacements, suggesting his initial surge may be short-lived.

  • 55 per cent of voters believe Sir Keir Starmer should resign as Prime Minister.
  • Andy Burnham’s popularity has plummeted by 12 points since May, the largest decline among potential successors.
  • Sir Keir’s approval rating remains unchanged at a dismal net -42.
  • Reform UK leads in general election polling with 27 per cent, ahead of Labour’s 20 per cent and the Conservatives’ 18 per cent.
  • Kemi Badenoch outperforms other major party leaders with a net approval of -4, and narrowly leads Sir Keir as preferred PM.

What This Means for Britain

This crisis at the heart of government directly impacts every working family in Britain. A leader rejected by over half the country cannot effectively address the spiralling cost of living, the crumbling NHS, or the daily struggles faced by ordinary people.

The economic uncertainty created by a deeply unpopular Prime Minister and a floundering opposition leadership only exacerbates the financial pressures on households. Investment stalls, jobs become insecure, and the promise of a brighter future recedes further from reach.

This pattern of leadership failure, broken promises, and a political establishment out of touch with the public is a betrayal. It signals a systemic problem where the voices of the people are ignored, and accountability is a forgotten concept.

If this continues, Britain faces a future of instability and decline. Voters must demand answers and action now, before the damage becomes irreversible. The stakes for our nation’s future have never been higher.

Share if you believe Britain deserves better than a leader rejected by over half the country. Demand answers from your MP. This must be seen by every British voter.
