Summary: Armed police assigned to protect Sadiq Khan left a bag containing firearms on a south London street, prompting a major investigation. The weapons were discovered by a member of the public before being recovered by police. Critics say the incident raises serious concerns about security procedures and public safety.

Bag Of Guns Left Outside Mayor’s Home

According to GB News, armed officers assigned to protect London Mayor Sadiq Khan left a bag filled with weapons outside his south London home.

The holdall, discovered at around 9.30pm, reportedly contained an MP5 carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser and ammunition.

The incident only came to light after a member of the public spotted the bag sitting by the roadside.

A pregnant woman reportedly kicked the bag out of suspicion before alerting her partner, who then took it inside and opened it.

What he found was not lost property. It was a full set of police-issued weapons.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers recovered the firearms within minutes of being alerted, but the fact remains the weapons were left unattended in a public street.

In a city already dealing with concerns about violent crime, that is not a minor slip. It is a serious failure.

Ex-Minister Slams “Absolutely Terrible” Incident

Former Conservative minister Kevin Foster described the situation as “hugely concerning” and criticised the handling of the weapons.

“The procedures for handling guns and firearms for both the police and the military are very extensive.

“The idea that you’re supposed to know where they are at all times… and that they could just be left outside is absolutely terrible.”

He warned the consequences could have been far worse if the bag had fallen into the wrong hands.

“If the bag was just taken away, you could easily have found those ending up being used in criminal matters, including potential murders.”

Foster also pointed out that the discovery was made by a member of the public, not the officers themselves.

That detail matters. Because it suggests the mistake was not quickly identified internally, but instead relied on luck.

Investigation Launched As Officers Removed From Duties

The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards has launched an investigation into how the incident happened.

All five officers involved have been removed from frontline duties while inquiries continue.

A police spokesman said the force is “urgently reviewing the circumstances” and acknowledged the concern the incident would cause.

At this stage, the bag is believed to have been “misplaced” by on-duty officers shortly before it was found.

That explanation may satisfy internal processes, but it does little to calm public concern.

This was not a missing clipboard or a forgotten radio. These were loaded weapons left unattended in a residential area.

The political fallout is obvious. The Mayor of London is responsible for overseeing policing in the capital. When a basic security failure like this happens on his own doorstep, questions are inevitable.

For the public, the issue is simpler.

If the people trusted to carry firearms safely cannot account for them at all times, confidence in the system takes a hit. And once that confidence starts to slip, it is not easily restored.
