Summary: Sir Keir Starmer has turned his fire on the security services as the Mandelson scandal spirals further out of control. According to The Telegraph, Labour MPs are openly questioning whether he should quit, Cabinet ministers are describing the situation as “existential”, and Parliament is demanding unredacted files. What began as a botched appointment is now threatening Starmer’s grip on power.

Starmer Shifts Blame As Pressure Explodes

Sir Keir Starmer has blamed failures in the security vetting process as Labour’s internal crisis deepens over the Lord Mandelson scandal. Speaking after another brutal day of political pressure, the Prime Minister said both due diligence and security checks “need to be looked at again”, an unusually direct criticism of the security services.

According to reporting by The Telegraph, this shift has not eased tensions. Instead, it has fuelled anger among Labour MPs who believe Starmer is trying to dodge responsibility for an appointment he personally signed off.

Several ministers privately told the paper that the situation is now “existential”, with one warning that only drastic action can save the party from further collapse.

Warnings Were Known And Ignored

Starmer insists he was deceived about the “depth and darkness” of Mandelson’s relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. However, documents compiled before the appointment reportedly showed Mandelson stayed at Epstein’s New York townhouse in 2009 and referenced a “particularly close relationship”.

Further undermining Starmer’s defence, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is said to have raised concerns with the British Government, while Cabinet Office officials warned Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s chief of staff, twice about Mandelson’s links.

Despite this, Mandelson was appointed ambassador to the United States and remained in post until public exposure forced his removal. He is now facing a criminal investigation into whether leaking sensitive information to Epstein amounted to misconduct in office.

Labour MPs Smell Weakness

Labour figures have begun publicly questioning Starmer’s judgment. Harriet Harman said claiming “he lied to me” makes the Prime Minister look weak and gullible. Others have gone further, openly suggesting he should consider his position.

One Labour MP told The Telegraph the real question is whether Starmer can “make it through to the weekend”. Another minister said the bare minimum required is the removal of McSweeney, adding that “something needs to change”.

The Intelligence and Security Committee has now demanded access to unredacted Mandelson files, stripping No 10 of control. Downing Street has spoken about transparency but is understood to be preparing to concede.

A Premiership Hanging By A Thread

This scandal has exposed more than one bad decision. It has revealed a leadership that ignored warnings, leaned on blame-shifting when exposed, and now faces rebellion from within. With Labour MPs watching how the crisis plays on the doorstep and a crucial by-election looming, Starmer’s authority is draining by the hour.

For voters outside Westminster, the message is simple. When a Prime Minister blames security services, advisers, and everyone but himself, confidence collapses fast. The Mandelson affair has become a test not just of judgment, but of whether Starmer is capable of leading at all.

Have your say

What about calming the markets which as we know prefer a stable government to one in turmoil as this one is. Liz Truss was dispatched quicker than greased lightning so hopefully Starmer will be gone over the weekend.

I hope this mandelson disaster opens up old news that Starmer swept many things to do with child abuse under the carpet. Saville for a start!!
