British troops are set to rehearse deploying into Ukraine if a ceasefire takes hold, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has confirmed on his first trip to Washington as the man in charge of the armed forces.

French, German and Polish forces will join the drill, first agreed at a Coalition of the Willing summit in July. Streeting cast it as proof Britain will help deliver security guarantees to Kyiv once the fighting stops. “Ukraine is the front line for freedom everywhere, and it’s absolutely vital that they prevail against Putin’s aggression,” he declared from the US capital. “We’re planning for the peace and freedom we want to see through our leadership of the coalition of the willing.”

Next month thousands of personnel will take part in a major exercise in Poland, he said, to ensure allies are ready to support military training and the post-war rebuilding Ukraine will need. According to The Times, the wargame will practise the logistics of moving troops plus food, fuel and other supplies into a post-conflict Ukraine. It forms a central plank of Britain’s bid to lead the European coalition standing behind Kyiv’s long-term security.

Labour ministers talk endlessly about hardening Ukraine’s frontiers and standing up to the Kremlin. Yet the same government leaves Britain’s own borders porous, with Channel crossings and an asylum system that still fails to remove those who have no right to stay. A country that cannot control who enters Dover has no business lecturing anyone about sovereignty hundreds of miles away while British communities carry the cost.

President Donald Trump deepened the split with European partners by refusing to state that Vladimir Putin started the war. “I know the details, OK, and at some point I’ll release the details,” the US president said. “But I don’t care anything except for one. I want that war ended.” He called President Zelensky “not a big fan” and “more difficult to deal with than Putin”.

Trump rift and energy blame game

Zelensky, at a Brussels summit, appeared to accept that Trump was using him as a scapegoat for rising fuel prices actually driven by the Iran conflict launched by the US and Israel in February. With American elections close, Trump has pointed to Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure rather than disruption through the Strait of Hormuz. During a London visit earlier in the week Zelensky accused the US president of restricting Starlink terminals vital to Ukrainian operations. Trump rejected it outright: “We didn’t do that. We didn’t slow it down at all.”

The gap widened further after Trump’s agreement to purchase Russian diesel, drawing fierce criticism that the deal could bankroll Putin’s campaign. Britain and most Nato nations have held the Kremlin responsible since Putin ordered forces across the Ukrainian border in 2022.

Streeting’s announcement puts British service personnel at the centre of post-ceasefire planning while domestic border failures continue under Labour. The exercise in Poland will test whether the coalition can actually move men and materiel when the guns fall silent. What happens next depends on whether a ceasefire ever materialises and whether Washington and Europe can close ranks. For now the Ministry of Defence is preparing the logistics, and the Defence Secretary has tied Britain’s name to the lead role.

Voters watching from home will note the contrast. Guarantees for Ukraine are being rehearsed in detail. Guarantees that Britain remains master of its own territory receive far less urgency from the same ministers. That is the record as it stands after Streeting’s Washington trip.
