Burnham folds City dinners into vague match guest line
Andy Burnham now says two dinners with Manchester City’s chairman sit inside his vague guest statement, though that wording never named them.

Andy Burnham now says two dinners with Manchester City’s chairman fall inside the vague line that he was a guest of the club at home matches on a small number of occasions. That wording, put out by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, made no reference to the dinners and did not name who he met. Jack Elsom set out the gap on X and called the whole episode farcical.
The dinners with Khaldoon Al Mubarak only came to light after a deleted register of interests was reached. Burnham had declared them at the time. The register was not removed by him but by the GMCA. Fair enough on the paperwork. The problem sits elsewhere.
He stood up in the Commons and spoke of one significant meeting in 2021, then held that line even as the records showed more. A public statement that talks only of match-day guest spots does not tell voters he sat down twice with the club’s chairman. People can judge the contacts for themselves once they are stated in plain English.
Sky News reported that Burnham has now ordered a manual trawl by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to hunt for any further interaction he had with Manchester City while mayor. That search follows the dinners already being folded back into the earlier guest wording. If the trawl finds more, the same test applies: put the facts out without forcing others to dig through deleted files.
Local power works only when the register and the public line match. Burnham declared the dinners once. He then offered a statement that never mentioned them or the chairman. He defended a Commons account of a single significant meeting while the paper trail pointed wider. The dinners were real, declared, and left out of the summary that voters were given. That is the awkward fact, and it is why the story will not settle until every contact is listed in the open.
This is becoming farcical.
