Reform UK insists a record-breaking £72m in donations from two crypto billionaires is completely legal, while Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner warns that new laws could apply retrospectively. According to Sky News, the historic funding has triggered an intense political row over party finance.
Reform UK has defended its acceptance of a record £72m after receiving two separate £36m donations from cryptocurrency figures Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo over the weekend. Party economy spokesperson Robert Jenrick defended the contributions during broadcast interviews, describing them as a breakthrough moment that leaves the party battle-ready for future elections.

However, the windfall has faced immediate political pushback from government ministers. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner warned that proposed legislation tackling overseas donations could be applied retrospectively, potentially forcing political parties to return funds that fall foul of new statutory caps.

Speaking on broadcast media, Ms Rayner outlined the government’s approach to closing loopholes in political funding. Under review proposals, donations from individuals based overseas or those who have recently returned to the country are subject to strict limits designed to protect democratic integrity.
With the retrospective action, anyone that’s received donations that doesn’t comply with what was in the Rycroft review, what legislation is currently going through Parliament, would have 60 days to return that money.
