A top finance boss has shredded the government’s economic strategy, warning that markets can smell speeches that commit to nothing. Nigel Green criticised the administration’s direction following a major speech by John Healey, as reported by the Daily Express.

Following a speech in Coventry, Nigel Green, CEO of global financial advisory firm deVere Group, launched a scathing assessment of the government’s economic direction. According to the Daily Express, Mr Green argued that despite a change of leadership, the administration is offering little that differs from past policies, noting that tax was a glaring omission from the Chancellor’s address.

Mr Healey used his first major speech since taking over at the Treasury to pledge control over government spending and vowed to make Britain growth-focused. He stated he wants to draw a line under the rising costs of business, including energy bills, regulations, planning constraints, and labour costs. However, he refused to rule out tax rises in the upcoming Budget.

Markets demand specificity, not hope

Critics argue that vague assurances fail to satisfy international investors who require concrete timelines and precise policy details. Mr Green warned that global capital avoids vague talk of resilience in favour of structured plans.
