Suella Braverman has set out her plan to make it mandatory for all UK schools to fly the Union flag and sing the national anthem. Delivering her speech, the education spokesperson declared that under a Reform Government, she will roll out a balanced patriotic curriculum.
Reform UK has announced a series of major education policy proposals aimed at reshaping the national curriculum and embedding traditional symbols across all state-funded schools. According to GB News, the plans include making it a legal requirement for every school to fly the Union flag and display a portrait of the King in a prominent communal space.
Delivering her keynote address, Suella Braverman set out the party’s vision for education, arguing that radical reform is urgently needed to address what she termed a failing system. She told the conference that traditional values have been sidelined by successive political administrations in favour of progressive narratives.
Tory and Labour governments have failed a generation of young people with a substandard curriculum that undermines academic rigour and national identity in favour of promoting their mass migration agenda. Reform will end this.— Suella Braverman, Education Spokesperson, Reform UK
Under the proposed policies, British history would form a minimum of 60 percent of the assessed content in history syllabuses. The curriculum would place renewed emphasis on foundational historical events including the Magna Carta, the English Civil War, the Glorious Revolution, the Act of Union, and Victorian Britain.
- Mandatory flying of the Union flag at every school
- Visible mounting of the King’s portrait in communal areas
- New patriotic history curriculum prioritising British heritage
- Powers for the Education Secretary to enforce compliance
As education secretary, I will introduce a new curriculum that will rekindle national pride and ensure that every child leaves school with an understanding of what a privilege it is to be British.
— Suella Braverman, Education Spokesperson, Reform UK
The announcements have drawn immediate scrutiny from education experts and political opponents over the level of central government intervention proposed for classrooms. Reform UK maintains that dedicated funding would be supplied to install necessary infrastructure such as flagpoles across all participating institutions.
