Official figures show that in the three months leading up to June 2026, a total of 140,122 migrants were granted indefinite leave to remain or British citizenship. This rate equates to 1.07 people every minute.

Almost 200,000 migrants secured indefinite leave to remain across the entire year ending June 2026. This represents a 24 per cent increase compared to the previous year and marks the highest total recorded in 16 years.

Proposed Legislative Overhauls

In response to the surging numbers, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is preparing significant legislative reforms. The proposed changes would extend the mandatory wait time for most migrants to gain indefinite leave to remain from five years to ten years.

Furthermore, low-paid foreign workers and refugees could face waiting periods of up to 15 or 20 years. The reforms would also restrict migrants from accessing state benefits until they successfully secure full British citizenship.
