David Lammy has retained access to his taxpayer-funded grace-and-favour mansion weeks after being sacked, according to the Daily Express. The former minister has been allowed to stay in the central London property until September.
A Grace Period For Sacked Ministers
While ordinary workers face immediate consequences when losing their jobs, high-ranking politicians enjoy a very different set of rules. Weeks after being removed from his prominent position in a cabinet reshuffle, David Lammy continues to occupy One Carlton Gardens.
The property, located near Buckingham Palace, is traditionally reserved for the serving foreign secretary. However, Lammy managed to hold onto the luxury pad through previous cabinet movements before finally being ousted.
The Defense From Westminster
Defenders within government have attempted to justify the extended stay by framing it as a practical necessity. Yet reports from within SW1 suggest a different motivation entirely behind the decision.

Historical Precedents Of Reluctance
Lammy is hardly the first senior political figure to show extreme reluctance in handing back the keys to taxpayer-funded accommodation. Previous prime ministers and cabinet ministers have similarly stretched out their departures from grace-and-favour addresses.
Nevertheless, the arrangement highlights the stark gap between the realities faced by ordinary taxpayers and the soft landings provided to Westminster insiders when they lose power.
Taxpayers are footing the bill for a sacked politician to enjoy a luxury London summer residence.

What the hell is all this ‘grace and favour’ nonsense ? Politicians do a JOB – however unsuccessful they may be at it – and should be living in a flat or a house, paying rent like any other person, while doing that job. Moving around from position to position in Government should then negate the need to move to another place of residence until they themselves decide to move and that should have nothing to do with taxpayers – or more correctly : the victims of legalised EXTORTION. The upkeep of that ‘Number10’ establishment is bad enough, without having to fork out for all the rest of those parasitic nincompoops.
