Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has vowed to “smash” the establishment after new reports surfaced regarding his finances. The Clacton MP insists he has done nothing wrong, followed all rules, and is now considering legal action against The Sunday Times.

The Reform UK leader faces renewed scrutiny over alleged undeclared financial benefits received from a convicted criminal. These claims, detailed by The Sunday Times, suggest support for staffing, security, and housing before Mr Farage became an MP.

This latest controversy comes as Reform UK continues to gain traction in national opinion polls, prompting accusations of a targeted “smear” campaign.

The Allegations Detailed

Reports indicate that George Cottrell, a long-time aide to Mr Farage, allegedly covered significant expenses for the politician. These included paying for three staff members to manage Mr Farage’s social media prior to the 2024 general election.

Mr Cottrell, who was jailed in the US in 2017 for wire fraud, also reportedly funded Mr Farage’s security during the election campaign. Furthermore, it is claimed that Mr Farage used a Georgian townhouse rented by Mr Cottrell near Buckingham Palace.

Under the rules in place at the time, new MPs were required to register gifts worth over £300 received in the preceding 12 months, unless they could not reasonably be thought to relate to political activities. Mr Farage did register a £9,000 trip to Belgium and belatedly added £15,000 for a US domestic flight, both donated by Mr Cottrell, but no other support was declared.

Farage and Reform UK Respond

I have done no wrongdoing, followed the rules and I am now considering legal action against the Sunday Times. It’s now clear the establishment will stop at nothing to hurt Reform – we want to smash their cosy consensus.

— Nigel Farage, Leader of Reform UK and Clacton MP

Mr Farage branded the claims an “establishment hit job,” asserting his intention to take legal action. Reform UK’s Treasury spokesman, Robert Jenrick, staunchly defended Mr Farage, stating that “no rules have been broken whatsoever” and that Mr Farage is “not going anywhere.”

Mr Jenrick confirmed that Mr Cottrell did pay for Mr Farage’s security and staff in 2024, but stressed this occurred “before he became a member of Parliament.” He argued that it was “perfectly legitimate for a personal friend to offer you security,” especially given Mr Farage’s status as “the most endangered person in public life” with authorities offering “next to nothing to help him.”

Regarding the townhouse, Mr Jenrick stated, “I believe Nigel has said that he stayed a couple of times there, very infrequently, as you’re allowed to.” He concluded there was “nothing to see here,” attributing the allegations to a “smear” campaign against Reform due to their leading position in national opinion polls.

  • Nigel Farage vows to “smash” the establishment following new funding allegations.
  • Claims suggest aide George Cottrell, convicted of wire fraud, paid for Farage’s staff, security, and housing pre-2024 election.
  • Farage did not declare these alleged benefits, though they reportedly occurred before he became an MP.
  • Reform UK’s Robert Jenrick confirms payments but insists “no rules have been broken whatsoever.”
  • Farage is considering legal action against The Sunday Times, calling the reports an “establishment hit job.”

What This Means for Britain

This latest attack on Nigel Farage, a figure who consistently challenges the political old guard, is more than just a Westminster squabble. It represents a desperate attempt to undermine the only real voice for change in British politics, distracting from the issues that truly impact working families.

While the establishment fixates on alleged undeclared benefits from before Mr Farage was an MP, ordinary Britons are grappling with a cost of living crisis, soaring bills, and a failing NHS. This diversionary tactic allows the cosy consensus to avoid accountability for the economic hardship faced by millions.

This pattern of character assassination against those who dare to question the status quo is a clear sign of the political establishment’s fear. They see Reform UK’s rise as a direct threat to their power and privilege, and they will stop at nothing to maintain it.

If these attacks are allowed to succeed, Britain risks losing its chance for genuine reform. The stakes are incredibly high; if we allow the establishment to silence dissenting voices, the future of our nation will remain firmly in the hands of those who have consistently failed us.

This must be seen by every British voter. Share if you believe Britain deserves better than these establishment games.
