Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer has published a 1,600-word essay claiming his policies were only just ‘shining through’ and that Britain is in a ‘better place’, despite official figures showing falling disposable incomes. His deputy, Lucy Powell, simultaneously stated Starmer had to go because he ‘lost the dressing room’.

Keir Starmer is set to leave Downing Street after just two years, with Andy Burnham poised to take over as Prime Minister on July 20. Starmer’s self-justifying article attempts to frame his short tenure as a success, even as his own party signals a different reality.

His departure follows a period where disposable incomes for households have reportedly dropped, despite Starmer’s claims of working people getting steadily better off. This stark contrast highlights a disconnect between the outgoing leader’s narrative and the economic reality facing British families.

Starmer’s Defence of a Failing Premiership

In his essay, released two years to the day after entering No10, Sir Keir insisted that ‘it was always the plan to confront the toughest decisions early in the political cycle’. He asserted that the benefits of these decisions were only now becoming visible, portraying himself as ‘passing the torch’ to Mr Burnham.

Sir Keir acknowledged that the ‘economy isn’t booming’ but attributed this to ‘unfavourable global circumstances’. He expressed pride that the country was ‘doing better than our peers’, despite government borrowing being on track to come down quicker than any other peer nation, and wages rising for working people every month he was in power.

The Truth From Within His Own Party

Sir Keir had to go because he ‘lost the dressing room’.

— Lucy Powell, Deputy Leader

This blunt assessment from his own deputy, Lucy Powell, directly contradicts Starmer’s attempts to control the narrative of his departure. It suggests a deep-seated dissatisfaction within Labour that led to his resignation, rather than a planned ‘passing of the torch’.

  • Disposable incomes for households tumbled 0.8 per cent in the first quarter of the year, accounting for inflation.
  • The RHDI per head metric, explicitly targeted by Sir Keir, has dropped in four of the last five quarters.
  • RHDI per head is now lower than when Labour started in power two years ago.
  • Sir Keir claimed his ‘plan’ needed more time, but his deputy stated he ‘lost the dressing room’.
  • Andy Burnham is expected to take over as PM on July 20 in a Labour ‘coronation’ after winning the Makerfield by-election.

What This Means for Britain

For working families across Britain, Sir Keir Starmer’s claims of a ‘better place’ ring hollow when disposable incomes are falling. Your ability to pay for essentials, from your heating bill to your weekly shop, has been directly impacted by policies that have demonstrably failed to improve household finances.

The economic impact is clear: real household disposable income per head is lower now than when Labour took power. This translates directly to a reduced quality of life, fewer opportunities, and a growing cost-of-living crisis that Starmer’s government has presided over.

This episode exposes a pattern of political failure and a desperate attempt to rewrite history. A leader claiming success while his own party forces him out for ‘losing the dressing room’ demonstrates a profound disconnect from reality and a failure of establishment leadership.

The stakes are incredibly high. If our leaders cannot even acknowledge the true state of the nation, how can they ever hope to fix it? This is not merely a leadership change; it is a stark reminder of the consequences of failed governance and misplaced priorities.

This must be seen by every British voter. Demand answers from your MP.

  1. He’s even more deranged than we thought! Self delusion isnt a reliable character reference. Can we have a retake on some of his earlier claims too.

  2. There is a certain arrogance about those who take on the top job, fail and then attempt to shift blame for their failure. No surprise really, been throwing others under the bus throughout his time in No 10. Pretty much the hallmark of his time , for which he will be remembered. Delusional to the bitter end, no loss to this nation and an embarrassment at home and abroad.
