Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe faces accusations of hypocrisy after dismissing “vote splitting” claims in the Makerfield by-election, despite making the identical argument in his own 2024 general election campaign. This stark contradiction has ignited a fierce debate on political integrity and strategy.
Mr Lowe, leader of the hard-right Restore Britain party, has come under fire for his stance on vote splitting. The controversy erupted as voters prepare to head to the polls in the crucial Makerfield by-election this Thursday, where his party’s presence could significantly impact the outcome.
Lowe Dismisses Makerfield Concerns
Ahead of the Makerfield by-election, Rupert Lowe gave an interview where he explicitly rejected criticism that his party risks handing the seat to Andy Burnham. Several polls suggest that Restore Britain, a splinter party targeting Reform voters, could be the deciding factor in the contest.
Speaking at his party’s “big action day” at the weekend, Mr Lowe asserted that claims of him splitting the vote do not hold “any water.” He elaborated on this view in an interview with the pro-Restore YouTube channel LotusEaters.
Lowe’s Own Words Resurface
My view on that is that splitting the vote is a very recidivist argument and it is made by people who know they are losing that argument. So I think democracy is about saying what you’re going to do, saying how you’re going to do it, getting the electorate to understand what your intentions are, and if they support that then they vote for it. I don’t think any form of the ‘splitting the vote’ argument holds any water at all…
— Rupert Lowe, Restore Britain Leader
This firm declaration from Mr Lowe has been directly contradicted by his own past actions. It has now emerged that he himself accused the Conservatives of threatening to split the vote when he was fighting for his own Commons seat in the 2024 general election.
- In a resurfaced X post from 2024, Rupert Lowe condemned Tory supporters campaigning in his Great Yarmouth constituency.
- He explicitly blasted: “Sad to see these attempts to split the vote and allow a Labour candidate in for Great Yarmouth.”
- Lowe added: “Every leaflet you deliver is a leaflet for the Labour candidate,” directly contradicting his current stance.
- A Reform source told the Mail: “Hypocrisy like this shows the true colour of the man,” urging voters to back Reform in Makerfield.
- Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg questioned Lowe’s change of mind, reiterating Lowe’s own previous words about leaflets helping Labour.
What This Means for Britain
This blatant hypocrisy from a prominent political figure undermines trust in the political process. For working families, this pattern of saying one thing and doing another makes it harder to discern genuine leadership from self-serving opportunism, impacting their ability to make informed choices that affect their daily lives, from heating bills to NHS appointments.
Economically, such perceived dishonesty can deter investment and create instability. When political figures are seen to operate without consistent principles, it erodes confidence, potentially impacting job creation and the cost of living for ordinary Britons.
Politically, this incident highlights a concerning pattern of behaviour where convenience trumps principle. It exposes a potential failure within the establishment to hold itself to consistent standards, leaving voters feeling disillusioned and unheard.
If this trend of political inconsistency continues unchecked, it risks deepening the chasm between the electorate and those who seek to govern. Readers should care now because their future, and the integrity of Britain’s democratic process, hangs in the balance.
This must be seen by every British voter. Demand answers from your MP.

Lowe knows Restore Britain Limited won’t win Makerfield with polls showing they only muster between 5 – 8% of the vote. What he does know is it could hand the seat to Burnham. Lowe has one aim, to stop Reform at any cost, how patriotic!!
Lowe has previously been filmed referring to an “agreement” with the Conservatives. Was part of the agreement Badenoch giving Lowe one of her select committee meeting seats to Lowe so he could sit on committee meetings instead of a tory MP?
