Meron Habtu, an Eritrean asylum seeker, has been jailed for a year after groping a 15-year-old girl on a train. Habtu had previously fooled authorities into believing he was a child upon his illegal arrival in the UK, despite being 24 years old.
This latest conviction occurred while Habtu was out on bail for a separate sexual assault. He came to the UK illegally in 2020 and was subsequently placed with a host family in Upwey, Dorset, after misrepresenting his age.
Deception and Repeat Offences
Habtu, born in 1996, told authorities he was 17 when he arrived in the UK. This deception led to him being housed with a family, a privilege intended for genuine child asylum seekers.
His first sexual offence took place in Weymouth in September 2021, where he sexually assaulted a drunk woman after reportedly “pestering” females outside bars and nightclubs. He was released on bail following this incident.
Victim’s Ordeal and Court Proceedings
“I did not consent to the male touching me in any way and his behaviour made me feel very uncomfortable and frightened. Watching the footage from the train had me in tears. This event changed the ending of my childhood and I grew up a lot quicker.”
— Victim’s Statement, read by Leah Dillon, Prosecuting
The 15-year-old victim’s statement highlighted the lasting trauma caused by Habtu’s actions. She described feeling unsafe on public transport, particularly trains, nearly four years after the assault.

What This Means for Britain
This case exposes a critical failure in our border security and asylum system. The deception of an adult posing as a child directly led to a predator being housed within our communities, ultimately harming a vulnerable teenager.
The economic impact of such failures is immense, not just in policing and court costs, but in the erosion of trust in our institutions. Resources meant for genuine child refugees are diverted, and the safety of our citizens is compromised.
This pattern of behaviour, where individuals exploit loopholes and our systems of compassion, highlights a profound political failure. Promises to secure our borders and protect our citizens ring hollow when such incidents occur.
The stakes are clear: if we do not demand accountability and reform, the safety of our children and the integrity of our nation will continue to be jeopardised. This is not just a single incident; it is a symptom of a much larger problem that must be addressed now.
