Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is preparing to use taxpayers’ money to wipe out energy debts for the poorest households as part of a targeted bailout to soften the impact of the Iran conflict on family fuel bills.

Debt Relief Scheme Delayed and Expanded

Ofgem’s existing £500m debt relief scheme – which would forgive debts for around 195,000 families from the 2022 energy crisis – has been temporarily delayed while ministers consider expanding it to cover the latest crisis. Industry sources say the move is one option being looked at to avoid costly blanket subsidies used during the Ukraine war.

How Will It Be Paid For?

The current scheme spreads costs across all households, adding around £5 to average bills by 2027-28. Any expansion could be funded the same way or through an increase in windfall taxes on renewable generators, which Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce this week. The overall household energy debt mountain currently stands at £4.6bn and is forecast to hit £7bn by the end of 2026.

Labour’s Broken £300 Bill Cut Promise

The plans come despite Labour’s repeated pledge to cut energy bills by £300 a year by 2030. Critics say using public funds to pay off debts creates a “moral hazard” and encourages non-payment while adding extra costs to everyone else’s bills.

  • Miliband to use taxpayers’ money to wipe out poorest households’ energy debts
  • £500m scheme delayed and potentially expanded for Iran crisis
  • Debt mountain forecast to hit £7bn by end of 2026
  • Costs could add £5+ to every household bill
  • Contradicts Labour’s £300 bill cut pledge

Reform UK: More Taxpayer-Funded Failure

Reform UK has condemned the plans as another example of Labour’s failed energy policy. While families face £2,000 annual bills and businesses struggle with 60 per cent higher industrial electricity prices, Ed Miliband is doubling down on Net Zero ideology instead of exploiting North Sea oil and gas to deliver cheap, reliable British energy.

What This Means for Britain

Once again, hardworking taxpayers are being asked to bail out the consequences of Labour’s green agenda and global events. Ed Miliband’s latest plan shows the Government has no long-term solution to Britain’s energy crisis – just more short-term subsidies and cost transfers onto everyone else’s bills.

Reform UK’s message is clear: stop the endless taxpayer-funded bailouts, end the war on North Sea oil and gas, and deliver real energy security and lower bills for British families. With local elections weeks away, voters can reject Labour’s failing energy policy and back the only party that will put British energy and British households first.
