In a bold move that has stunned EU officials, Hungary’s prime minister-elect Péter Magyar has rejected the European Union’s Migration and Asylum Pact and vowed to reinforce the country’s southern border fence even further.

Magyar Delivers Clear Message to Brussels

Speaking on April 15, 2026, just days after his Tisza Party’s landslide victory ended Viktor Orbán’s 16-year dominance, Magyar declared Hungary will not accept any migration pact or quota system. “Hungary is taking a very strict stance on illegal migration,” he said. “It does not accept any kind of pact or allocation mechanism. We will keep our southern borderline. In fact, we are going to patch up the holes that are there now.”

No Release for Convicted Traffickers

Magyar also ruled out releasing 2,200 convicted traffickers from Hungarian prisons and dismissed any suggestion of transporting migrants across borders for political gain. He stressed that while legal migration pathways would be acknowledged, Tisza would maintain a strict policy on illegal entries.
