Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has vowed that “sham lawyers” who help migrants fake gay asylum claims “will face the full force of the law” after a BBC undercover investigation exposed how legal advisers are charging thousands of pounds to coach overstayed visa holders with bogus evidence.

Mahmood Promises Swift Action

Speaking after the BBC exposé, Shabana Mahmood said anyone abusing protections for genuine persecution victims is “beyond contempt”. She warned: “Try to defraud the British people to enter or remain in the UK and your asylum claim will be refused, your support cut off, and you will find yourself on a one-way flight out of Britain.”

The Home Office is now investigating the individuals and firms highlighted, as part of a wider probe into a growing trend of fabricated LGBT claims.

BBC Investigation Exposes Systematic Abuse

Undercover reporters revealed lawyers instructing migrants (often those whose student, work or tourist visas have expired) on how to pretend to be gay, atheist or political activists. For fees of £1,500 plus £2,000–£3,000 for fake evidence, advisers provide:

  • Fake same-sex “partners” and supporting letters
  • Club memberships and staged photographs
  • Bogus websites publishing AI-written articles
  • Coaching on interview answers and even facial expressions

One lawyer told an undercover reporter pretending to be gay was “much easier” because officials “will not dig too much into your past story”.

Disproportionate Claims from Pakistan

Home Office data shows Pakistani nationals make up 42% of LGBT-based asylum claims despite being only 6% of overall applications. Nearly two-thirds of such claims were granted at the initial stage in 2023. This group now accounts for 35% of all asylum claims, which topped 100,000 in 2025.

Genuine LGBT campaigners and charities have expressed outrage, saying the scam harms real victims and makes it harder for those genuinely in danger.

Reform UK Demands Root-and-Branch Reform

Reform UK Home Affairs Spokesman Zia Yusuf said the party would “put a stop to the legal-industrial complex exploiting the generosity of the British taxpayer”. A Reform government would make facilitating a false asylum claim a strict liability criminal offence (up to two years in jail) and immediately abolish legal aid for anyone entering illegally or overstaying their visa.

Cross-Party Reactions

Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called for the system to be “totally overhauled”. Liberal Democrat spokesman Will Forster described the findings as “abhorrent”. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and Immigration Advice Authority have launched urgent investigations.

What This Means for Britain

The BBC investigation has lifted the lid on a cynical industry profiting from Britain’s generous asylum rules while genuine refugees wait in the queue. Taxpayers are funding hotels, legal aid and processing for claims that are systematically gamed.

With small boat arrivals continuing and public confidence in the system at rock bottom, voters are demanding action. Reform UK’s pledge to end legal aid for illegal entrants and criminalise fake claims is gaining strong support ahead of the May 7 local elections.

Britain’s borders must be controlled and our asylum system must protect those who truly need it — not reward those who abuse it.

Share if you believe sham lawyers exploiting the asylum system must be stopped now.
