North Sea gas producer Spirit Energy has told staff its Aberdeen headquarters will close by the end of the year, placing around 100 jobs at risk as the firm restructures to prioritise Ed Miliband’s Net Zero carbon capture projects over traditional drilling.
Aberdeen HQ Closure Confirmed
Employees at the company’s base in the IQ Building on Justice Mill Lane were informed on 14 April that Spirit Energy plans to split into two separate entities. The current Aberdeen premises will close permanently, with a 45-day consultation now underway.
The firm currently employs around 150 people in Aberdeen. Under the proposals this will fall to about 50, with the majority of affected roles being office-based administrative and support positions.
Restructuring Splits Operations
The overhaul will create two new companies:
- A Barrow-in-Furness-based operating company to manage the Morecambe Hub fields in the East Irish Sea
- An Aberdeen-based development company focused on advancing the Morecambe Net Zero carbon capture and storage project
A limited number of new roles will be created in Barrow, while remaining Aberdeen staff will move to smaller premises elsewhere in the city. Operational activity has already shifted largely to Barrow.
Net Zero Agenda Blamed for Job Losses
The announcement comes as Labour’s Net Zero drive continues to sideline North Sea oil and gas exploration. Spirit Energy’s remaining assets are approaching the end of their productive lifespan later this decade, prompting the realignment.
A company spokesman said: “We have shared with colleagues a proposal to restructure our UK organisation, separating into two independent organisations… We are committed to supporting all our colleagues throughout the consultation process.”
Trump Urges Britain to “Drill, Baby, Drill”
The news arrives shortly after US President Donald Trump criticised the UK’s energy policy and urged Britain to ramp up North Sea drilling. Trump declared “Aberdeen should be booming” and called the current situation “Tragic!!!” He has repeatedly told the UK to “drill, baby, drill” and criticised reliance on windmills.
Reform UK: Net Zero Is Costing British Jobs
Reform UK has repeatedly warned that Labour’s green agenda is destroying British energy jobs and security. The party demands an immediate end to the war on North Sea oil and gas, with full support for domestic drilling to protect workers and lower energy bills.
Zia Yusuf and other Reform spokesmen have highlighted how billions spent on foreign aid and Net Zero subsidies could instead secure British energy independence and protect high-skilled jobs in Aberdeen and across the North Sea.
- 100 Aberdeen jobs at risk from Spirit Energy closure
- Net Zero carbon capture project prioritised over drilling
- North Sea assets nearing end of life under current policy
- Trump calls for Britain to “drill, baby, drill”
- Reform demands end to green policies harming UK energy workers
What This Means for Britain
The Spirit Energy announcement is the latest blow to Aberdeen’s energy sector and a stark warning of the human cost of Labour’s Net Zero obsession. While ministers push carbon capture schemes, real jobs in one of Britain’s most important energy hubs are being lost.
With global energy prices volatile and Britain still importing gas, voters are asking why domestic production is being deliberately run down. Reform UK’s message is clear: Britain must drill, produce and use its own resources to keep the lights on and protect British workers.
As the 45-day consultation begins, pressure is mounting on Ed Miliband and the Government to explain how their green policies justify putting another 100 skilled British jobs at risk.
