Summary: Andy Burnham has confirmed he intends to seek selection to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election, signalling a direct return to Westminster after nearly a decade away. The move exposes growing tension inside Labour and carries major consequences for Greater Manchester.

Why is Andy Burnham standing in the by-election?

Andy Burnham has formally written to Labour’s National Executive Committee requesting permission to stand as the party’s candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election.

The Greater Manchester Mayor submitted his request just before the deadline, describing the decision as difficult but necessary given the political moment.

In his letter, Burnham argued the by-election represented a critical test for Labour in the north-west, framing it as a defence of what he described as long-standing civic and social values in Manchester.

“This is the moment to mount the strongest possible defence of what we stand for and what we have built in this city over many generations.”

Burnham has been Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017 and remains one of Labour’s most recognisable figures outside Parliament.

What does Burnham’s return mean for Labour’s leadership?

Although Burnham insists his return would be supportive, his move inevitably raises questions about Labour’s internal balance of power.

He has previously been viewed as a potential future leadership contender, and some within Labour are reportedly wary of his return to the Commons at a time when the party’s national polling position has weakened.

Burnham attempted to address those concerns directly, stating that he had reassured the Prime Minister he would not seek to undermine the Government.

“I would be there to support the work of the Government, not undermine it.”

Senior Labour figures have welcomed his bid, arguing the party needs experienced figures in Parliament as political pressure increases.

Why is there a by-election in Gorton and Denton?

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, who stepped down after losing the party whip over offensive remarks made in a private messaging group.

Gwynne had previously held the seat with a strong majority, but Labour’s position has weakened amid voter frustration and the rise of smaller parties.

Reform UK and the Green Party are both expected to campaign aggressively, adding real uncertainty to what Labour would normally consider a safe contest.

What happens if Burnham wins the seat?

If elected as MP, Burnham would be legally required to resign as Mayor of Greater Manchester, automatically triggering a mayoral by-election across the city-region.

This would create significant political risk for Labour locally, potentially reopening control of one of its most high-profile regional positions.

For Burnham, the decision represents a high-stakes trade-off between regional authority and national influence. For Labour, the final call now rests with the NEC, which can still block his candidacy entirely.

Just what the hell does that load of Globalist-puppets ‘stand for’, these days ???
This country is being ruined, sold out and utterly devastated by their anti-British idiocy.
They seem to be unable to mount any form of defence against the INVASION of so-called ‘refugees’ who have travelled through a number of SAFE countries, only to take a life-threatening trip across 21 miles of dangerous shipping lanes, in a little rubber boat, in order to land up on an island off the north-west coast of Europe ! It just beggars belief !
WHEN HAS THE ROYAL NAVY EVER BEEN CALLED IN TO STOP THE NONSENSE ???
Quote : “I would be there to support the work of the Government, not undermine it.”
So you would ‘support’ this invasion, and all the rest of their destructive twaddle, would you, Mr Burnham ? I think you’d be better off staying where you are, mate ! At least, there, you’re restricted in the amount of damage you can do. We’ve got more than enough to put up with from that TOOL in No.10, thanks very much !
