Zia Yusuf has set out a clear charge against Andy Burnham over the Makerfield election, saying crucial disinformation was injected into the campaign and that voters were misled on Brexit. Speaking on X, Yusuf stated that Burnham told the people of Makerfield, who overwhelmingly voted for Brexit, that he would not re-run the old arguments and was not proposing the UK consider rejoining the EU.

Yusuf’s account is straightforward. Burnham secured the seat on that basis. Having won, he is now doing the very thing he promised not to do. The Reform UK chairman put the question directly to Burnham: is this also “Russian interference”, or are you just a self-serving liar? The post lands as a public challenge, not a private grumble.

Makerfield’s Brexit majority is not in dispute. Residents backed leaving the European Union in large numbers. Yusuf’s point is that a candidate who soft-pedals the issue to win their votes, then pivots once the result is in, has broken faith with the people who put him there. That is the steel in the filing. Sovereignty was settled at the ballot box. Reopening it by stealth insults those who delivered the verdict.

Yusuf does not dress the charge up. He names the promise, names the breach, and invites Burnham to explain himself. There is no waffle about process or tone. The voters were told one thing. They are now watching another. For a constituency that chose Brexit, the gap between campaign words and later conduct matters.

The intervention keeps the focus where it belongs: on the pledge made to Makerfield and the reverse course taken afterwards. Yusuf has put the facts on the record via X and left Burnham to answer them. Britain’s decision to leave the EU was not a temporary mood. It was a democratic instruction. Candidates who treat it as optional after the count do so at their own risk.

Yusuf’s message is plain. Disinformation in an election campaign is serious. So is a politician who wins on a clear Brexit assurance and then walks it back. Makerfield deserves better than that. The challenge stands.
