Plans to quadruple the number of asylum seekers in houses across Breckland have sparked local fury following unrest in Thetford, according to the Daily Express. Officials have confirmed proposals to surge bed spaces from 56 to 240.

Local authorities were told that the Home Office intends to increase houses in multiple occupation across the Norfolk district by an eye-watering 428 percent. The district covers Thetford, where angry crowds targeted properties housing asylum seekers earlier this summer, leading to multiple arrests and police escorts for occupants.

The announcement compounds existing anxieties across the region, given that Thetford sits less than two miles from RAF Barnham. That former military base has been earmarked to house at least 1,250 single male asylum seekers as part of central government proposals.

Politicians Warn of Double Whammy

Local representatives have condemned the acceleration of housing schemes, branding the combination of large-scale camps and dispersed house shares an unacceptable burden on rural infrastructure. Reform councillor Scott Hussey hit out at the secretive nature of the rollout during council discussions.
