French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly made a direct appeal to new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging him to pursue significantly closer ties with the European Union. This controversial message, delivered as Sir Keir Starmer exited office, has ignited fears of a potential Brexit betrayal and a significant shift away from British sovereignty, according to the Daily Express.

Foreign Meddling and the Threat to Sovereignty

The intervention by President Macron, as reported by the Daily Express, is a stark reminder of the persistent external pressures on the United Kingdom’s hard-won independence. His congratulatory message to outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer included praise for “strengthening cooperation between the United Kingdom, France and our European partners.” Crucially, Macron then pointedly urged Mr. Burnham to provide “new impetus to the partnership between the United Kingdom and the European Union.”

This thinly veiled directive from a foreign head of state raises serious questions about the respect for British democracy and the 2016 referendum result. Ordinary British people voted decisively to leave the European Union, a mandate that should be sacrosanct and not subject to foreign influence or political manoeuvring.

Burnham’s Ambiguous Stance on Europe

Andy Burnham’s past statements on the European Union have been a source of some ambiguity. While he has previously voiced a hope to see Brexit overturned “in his lifetime,” he has more recently tempered this by pledging not to “re-run” the arguments of the 2016 referendum. However, the nuances of his current position, particularly concerning economic and security alignment, still suggest a potential drift closer to Brussels.

Reform UK maintains that any form of creeping alignment or re-engagement with EU structures would undermine the democratic will of the British people. The focus must be on leveraging the freedoms gained from Brexit, not on ceding control back to a bloated bureaucracy.

The Cost of Betrayal: Economic and Democratic

A return to closer EU ties, whether through direct rejoining or significant regulatory alignment, risks shackling the UK economy and stifling the opportunities that Brexit was meant to unlock. The promises made to the British people about taking back control of laws, borders, and trade must be honoured.

“The last thing we should do right now is re-run those arguments [about Brexit].”

— Andy Burnham

The government’s priority should be to deliver value for money for taxpayers, focusing on domestic issues and strengthening the UK’s position as an independent global trading nation. Wasting time and resources on re-litigating the past would be a betrayal of working families and a misaligned priority.

Reform UK’s Call for Vigilance

Reform UK urges Prime Minister Burnham to resist any pressure to compromise on British sovereignty. The party believes that the government must demonstrate unwavering commitment to the principles of Brexit and ensure that all policy decisions are made in the best interests of the United Kingdom, free from external influence. This includes:

  • Upholding the democratic mandate of the Brexit referendum.
  • Resisting calls for closer alignment with EU laws and regulations.
  • Prioritising British trade deals and economic independence.
  • Ensuring that British borders remain secure and controlled.
  • Focusing on domestic growth and supporting working families.
  • Rejecting any attempts by foreign powers to dictate UK policy.

The eyes of the nation are now on Prime Minister Burnham. He must demonstrate that he is truly committed to British sovereignty and the will of the people, rather than yielding to foreign pressure or pursuing a path that undermines the democratic decision to leave the European Union. Reform UK will hold him and his government to account on this critical issue.
