After years of dithering, the government has finally proscribed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. While this move is undeniably welcome, it raises serious questions about the delays that left Britain vulnerable and whether this belated action truly goes far enough to protect our national security.
The Long Road to Proscription: Why the Delay?
For years, security experts, concerned citizens, and opposition parties, including Reform UK, have called for the IRGC to be banned. This organisation, a powerful branch of the Iranian military, has been directly linked to plots on British soil, including attempts to kidnap and assassinate UK residents. Its malign influence extends globally, funding and directing proxy groups that destabilise the Middle East and threaten international peace.
The government’s reluctance to act sooner has been a source of frustration and anger. Critics argue that the delay was a failure of political will, prioritising complex diplomatic considerations over the immediate safety and security of ordinary British people. This pattern of delayed, reactive policy-making has become a hallmark of the Westminster establishment, leaving our nation exposed to evolving threats.
Understanding the IRGC Threat
The IRGC is not merely a military force; it is a sprawling economic and political empire within Iran, deeply entwined with the regime’s ideology. It has been responsible for widespread human rights abuses at home and has actively exported its revolutionary agenda abroad through terrorism and proxy warfare. Its actions directly contradict British values of freedom and democracy.
The proscription now makes it a criminal offence to be a member of the IRGC, express support for it, or arrange meetings for the organisation. This provides law enforcement with crucial tools to disrupt its networks and prosecute those involved. However, the sheer scale of the IRGC’s global operations means that a domestic ban, while important, is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
“The proscription of the IRGC is a necessary step, but it’s crucial that the government follows through with a comprehensive strategy to counter Iranian aggression. This cannot be a symbolic gesture; it must be backed by robust intelligence, international cooperation, and a clear message that Britain will not tolerate state-sponsored terrorism.”
— Dr. Alan Mendoza, Executive Director of the Henry Jackson Society
Beyond the Ban: What More Must Be Done?
While the ban is a significant first step, many believe it’s insufficient to fully address the deep-seated threat posed by the Iranian regime. Reform UK has consistently advocated for a more proactive and robust foreign policy that prioritises British sovereignty and national interests. This includes:
- Tougher Sanctions: Expanding targeted sanctions against individuals and entities connected to the IRGC and the broader Iranian regime.
- Financial Disruption: Working with international partners to aggressively track and freeze IRGC assets globally, cutting off their funding streams.
- Enhanced Intelligence: Investing more in intelligence capabilities to monitor and disrupt Iranian plots both domestically and abroad.
- Cyber Security: Strengthening national cyber defences against state-sponsored attacks originating from Iran.
- Diplomatic Pressure: Leading international efforts to isolate the Iranian regime and hold it accountable for its actions on the world stage.
- Protecting Dissidents: Ensuring the safety of Iranian dissidents and critics living in the UK, who often become targets of the regime.
Reform UK’s Stance: Prioritising British Security
Some critics, often from the establishment, have suggested that Reform UK’s focus on national sovereignty is isolationist. However, Reform UK’s stated policy is to prioritise British national security and the protection of its citizens above all else. This means taking decisive action against hostile foreign powers, ensuring our borders are secure, and investing in a strong defence. We believe in common sense solutions that put ordinary British people first, rather than getting bogged down in complex, often ineffective, international diplomacy that fails to deliver tangible results for our security.
The belated proscription of the IRGC highlights a recurring theme: the Westminster establishment often acts too slowly, too cautiously, and too reactively when it comes to protecting Britain. It’s time for a government that understands the urgency of these threats and has the courage to act decisively, putting British security and sovereignty at the forefront of its agenda. We cannot afford to wait until it’s too late.
It’s time for real change. Join Reform UK in demanding a government that puts Britain’s security first, acts decisively against hostile threats, and truly delivers for the British people. Your voice matters.
