Reports indicate that Andy Burnham is determined to push ahead with a controversial deal to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This move, which includes the strategically vital Diego Garcia base, represents a profound betrayal of British sovereignty and raises alarming questions about our national security. It’s time for the Westminster establishment to be held accountable for this reckless decision.
A Strategic Asset Surrendered
The Chagos Archipelago, a British Indian Ocean Territory, is not just a collection of remote islands; it is home to Diego Garcia, a military base of unparalleled strategic importance to both the UK and the US. For decades, this base has been a critical hub for operations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, playing a pivotal role in global security and counter-terrorism efforts. To even contemplate its cession is to wilfully ignore its immense value to our national interests.
Yet, a senior Foreign Office official has reportedly assured Mauritian ministers that the handover will proceed. This commitment, made seemingly behind closed doors and without robust public debate, smacks of a government prioritising international appeasement over the protection of British assets and British sovereignty. Ordinary British people deserve to know why their government is so eager to relinquish control of such a vital strategic outpost.
The Illusion of Control: A Costly Leaseback
The proposed deal involves the UK ceding sovereignty to Mauritius, which would then lease back Diego Garcia to the UK and US. The reported price tag for this leaseback is a staggering £35 billion. This complex arrangement not only undermines the principle of British sovereignty but also introduces an element of long-term instability. Why should British taxpayers pay billions to lease back territory that is rightfully ours?
This is not ‘taking back control’; it is the very opposite. It is an act of surrendering control, then paying an exorbitant sum for a temporary, conditional privilege on what was once British land. This is a classic example of the political class making decisions that defy common sense and fail to deliver value for money for working families across the UK.
“The Chagos Islands are a crucial part of Britain’s global defence footprint. To give them away, especially without a clear mandate or robust public debate, is an act of strategic negligence that will reverberate for decades. It sets a dangerous precedent for other British territories.”
— Dr. Alan Mendoza, Executive Director, Henry Jackson Society
Broken Promises and Betrayal
This decision feels like another broken promise from a government that continually fails to deliver for the British people. The narrative of ‘taking back control’ rings hollow when strategic British territory is being handed over. Reform UK believes in strong, independent Britain that defends its interests and stands firm on its territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the historical context of the Chagos Islanders, who were forcibly removed, adds another layer of complexity. While their plight deserves attention, the solution should not come at the expense of national security or by undermining British sovereignty. A responsible government would find a way to address historical injustices without compromising vital strategic assets.
Reform UK’s Stance: Defend British Sovereignty
Reform UK stands unequivocally for the defence of British sovereignty and national security. We believe that decisions regarding British territory should be made in the best interests of the British people, not under pressure from international bodies or for short-term political gain. We demand transparency and accountability from the government on this critical issue.
When politicians like Andy Burnham push ahead with such deals, they demonstrate a disconnect from the common sense priorities of ordinary British people. Reform UK’s stated policy is to uphold the integrity of all British territories and ensure that any diplomatic resolutions are consistent with strengthening, not weakening, our national defence and sovereignty. We will not stand by as the Westminster elites give away our strategic assets.
The Consequences of Capitulation
The long-term consequences of this capitulation could be severe. It could embolden other nations with territorial claims against the UK, weaken our international standing, and complicate our ability to project power and protect our interests globally. This is not just about a few islands; it’s about the principle of sovereignty and the future of Britain’s role on the world stage.

I have never heard of a so called deal as bad as this. The worst deal in history.
Hasn’t got the job yet, but already being controlled by back benchers, senior civil servants and the unions. Does not bode well for the future,Brits need to be behind Chagossians in pressing their rights to their homeland and halting this deal.
Which International Community?! Are we not a significant international presence. This is nothing more than an old boys Fabian network stitch-up with dirty money changing hands.
