Ed Miliband’s plan to install 94 “monster” wind turbines, some four times taller than Nelson’s Column, across four Northern counties has sparked outrage. The proposals threaten to devastate areas of “high landscape value” and bypass local democratic planning processes.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is facing significant backlash over his proposals for 94 colossal wind turbines across County Durham, Northumberland, Lancashire, and West Yorkshire. These structures, reaching up to 230 metres tall, are designed to be placed on prominent hillsides, raising concerns about their visual and environmental impact.

The plan has already generated “huge resentment” against Labour across vast areas of the North. Critics argue that Miliband is deliberately circumventing local opposition by designating the projects as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, allowing him sole decision-making power if he remains in his post.

Miliband’s Plan: Destroying Northern Beauty

Miliband’s scheme involves erecting 94 wind turbines, each up to 230 metres tall, across Barningham Moor in County Durham, Ray Fell in Northumberland, Scout Moor in Lancashire, and Walshaw Moor in West Yorkshire. These sites include areas previously deemed of “high landscape value” where a judge ruled against 54-metre turbines in 1999, stating they would “seriously harm” the region.

The proposed turbines would be visible for dozens of miles, ruining the landscape over much of the North. Additionally, the plan includes new access roads cutting through the moors and miles of pylons, as the power generated would not be needed locally, further impacting these cherished natural environments.

The Growing Opposition

If Andy Burnham sacks Ed Miliband from the Cabinet there will be resounding cheers across the North of England.

— Breaking Brexit News analysis

This sentiment highlights the depth of public anger towards Miliband’s proposals. The plan is seen as a direct assault on the natural wealth and beauty of the North, with local communities feeling sidelined by the Energy Secretary’s unilateral decision-making.

  • Ed Miliband plans 94 wind turbines up to 230 metres tall, four times Nelson’s Column’s height.
  • These turbines would be placed on Barningham Moor, Ray Fell, Scout Moor, and Walshaw Moor.
  • Miliband is using “Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project” status to bypass local planning.
  • Property prices near turbines under 100 metres fell 12 per cent; 200-metre turbines would cause “far worse” impact.
  • Academics estimate 35,000 birds, including golden eagles and peregrines, would be killed by these turbines.

What This Means for Britain

For working families in the North, this plan means the permanent scarring of their local landscapes, the places they value for peace and natural beauty. Imagine your view from home or your weekend walks being dominated by industrial-scale turbines, casting constant shadow-flicker, and replacing birdsong with a constant swooping sound.

Economically, the impact is stark. Academic research indicates property values near turbines under 100 metres fall by 12 per cent; with 200-metre turbines, the impact would be “far worse.” This represents a direct hit to the wealth and stability of homeowners in affected areas.

Politically, this is another example of an out-of-touch establishment imposing its will, ignoring local democracy and environmental costs. Miliband’s use of “Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project” status is a cynical move to silence opposition, a clear pattern of bypassing the very people these projects claim to serve.

The stakes are incredibly high. If this project proceeds, it sets a dangerous precedent for environmental destruction and democratic bypass across Britain. We must ask if the Government is willing to sacrifice our natural heritage and local voices for an ideological agenda that even “eco-enthusiasts” at The Guardian call senseless.

Share if you believe Britain deserves better than its landscapes being sacrificed by political decree. Demand answers from your MP. This must be seen by every British voter.
