The leader of a Reform UK-run council has vowed to “fight this proposal every step of the way” after Labour’s Home Office announced plans to house 1,250 illegal migrants at a former RAF base in a small Suffolk village. The council chief condemned the move as “entirely unacceptable” and claimed no prior warning or consultation was given.

Councillor Michael Hadwen, leader of Suffolk County Council, expressed “enormous concerns” over the Home Office’s proposal to convert RAF Barnham into a permanent migrant accommodation site. This plan aims to house 1,250 illegal migrants in a village with a small rural primary school, allowing residents to come and go freely.

Labour’s Accommodation Strategy Sparks Fury

The Home Office announced on Thursday that it is seeking planning permission for the former RAF base in Barnham. This move is part of a broader effort to close down asylum hotels, with similar plans for MoD sites in Bicester, Oxfordshire, and Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire, collectively accommodating 3,750 migrants.

Cllr Hadwen highlighted that the site is being promoted as a long-term or even permanent part of the Home Office’s illegal migrant accommodation plans. The council leader stated that neither the council nor local communities received “no prior warning or consultation” about these significant proposals, learning of them “shortly” before the media.

“Suffolk’s Communities Come First”

As Leader of Suffolk County Council, I will fight this proposal every step of the way. Suffolk’s communities come first.

— Councillor Michael Hadwen, Leader of Suffolk County Council

Cllr Hadwen stated that he “categorically object[s] to the use of RAF Barnham to house illegal migrants,” asserting that nothing in his urgent briefing with the Home Office lessened his concerns. He pledged that the council would support the local community in demonstrating “why this is the wrong place for mass illegal migrant accommodation.”

  • 1,250 illegal migrants planned for former RAF Barnham base.
  • Suffolk County Council received “no prior warning or consultation” from the Home Office.
  • The site will allow migrants to “come and go as they please” in a small village.
  • Plans are for a “long term or even permanent” accommodation site.
  • This forms part of a wider strategy to house 3,750 migrants across three MoD sites.

What This Means for Britain

This decision means another rural British community faces the imposition of mass migrant accommodation without local consent. For working families in Barnham, this represents a fundamental change to their village, impacting local services, schools, and the safety of their children, all without their voices being heard.

Economically, diverting resources to house thousands of illegal migrants at permanent sites places further strain on the national purse. This comes as the cost of living crisis continues to bite, with taxpayers footing the bill for a problem the government promised to control.

Politically, this incident highlights a pattern of central government overriding local democracy and community concerns. It exposes the ongoing failure to secure Britain’s borders and manage immigration effectively, eroding trust in the establishment’s ability to deliver on its promises.

The stakes are clear: if local communities can be ignored on issues of such profound impact, then the integrity of our democratic process and the character of our nation are at risk. This is not just about one village; it’s about the future of Britain.

Share if you believe Britain deserves better than having its communities ignored and its borders unprotected. Demand answers from your MP. This must be seen by every British voter.
