Reform UK councillors in Birmingham have called for council proceedings to be conducted solely in English after an Islamic prayer was read aloud in Arabic at a mayoral swearing-in ceremony, as reported by GB News.

Council Accessibility and National Language

Newly-appointed Lord Mayor Zaker Choudhry invited an imam to deliver a verse from the Koran in Arabic during his inauguration. Reform UK’s 23-strong group, the largest at Birmingham Council, immediately argued that all council meetings must remain “inclusive and accessible to all residents regardless of religion or culture,” by using the national language, English.

In a letter to the Lord Mayor, the Reform councillors stated that it was “inappropriate” for any readings or proceedings to be in a language many residents did not understand. Group leader Jex Parkin emphasised that “only the English language should be used in public meetings in this country,” according to GB News.

Reform UK’s Stance on Language and Culture

Mr Parkin affirmed that Reform UK would “always advocate for this, on behalf of the residents that elected us to promote and protect the language, culture and values of the United Kingdom.” He added that many residents share their view on the matter.

The call sparked immediate backlash from Labour Councillor Majid Mahmood, who claimed the Reform warning was “nonsense” and risked “sending a deeply unfortunate message.” Mahmood stated, “Birmingham’s diversity is our strength, not something to be feared or politicised,” as reported by GB News.

What This Means for Britain

This incident highlights the ongoing debate about national identity, cultural integration, and the role of language in public life across Britain.

For ordinary British people, it raises questions about accessibility and inclusivity in local governance, particularly for those who do not understand other languages.

The controversy underscores the tension between celebrating diversity and maintaining a common national language for official proceedings, impacting how local councils operate.

It also reflects a broader political divide, with Reform UK positioning itself as a defender of traditional British values and language in public spaces.

This push for English-only proceedings could set a precedent for other councils where Reform UK has a significant presence, influencing local government policies nationwide.

The clash demonstrates how cultural practices in civic ceremonies can become flashpoints for wider political arguments about national character and community cohesion.

  1. They’ve been warned time a time again about the way these elements are taking over councils in this country, but as soon as you say anything, all you get in return is accusations of ‘this-phobia’ or ‘that-phobia’ and, of course, the playing of the ‘race card’.
Only when you get the eventual violence – which ALWAYS follows the instigation of these parasites into strong, political power – will you start to get an intelligent, common sense attitude towards the situation . . . . hopefully, not too late for us all.
Of course, the REAL answer lies in the election of a Reform-UK Government . . . . and stop the nonsense in its tracks !
