Labour MPs are reportedly planning to pressure the Home Office to abandon immigration reforms, using an expected fall in net migration figures to bolster their argument. This comes as new data is anticipated to show net migration at its lowest level since the pandemic, according to The Independent.

Pressure on Immigration Reforms

The Labour government could face significant pressure from its own backbenchers to reverse planned immigration changes. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is set to release figures for 2025 this week, which are expected to show a notable decrease in net migration.

Migration expert Dr Ben Brindle predicted the figures could show net migration falling below 200,000 for the first time since March 2021. However, Dr Brindle, from the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, cautioned that this decline is likely temporary, driven by more people leaving the UK after previous immigration restrictions.

Proposed Changes Under Fire

The reforms, announced by the Home Secretary in November, include increasing the default qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from five to ten years. Additionally, migrants would only qualify for benefits and social housing once they become British citizens, and those in the country illegally could face up to a 30-year wait for long-term residency.

Labour MP Andy McDonald, a vocal opponent of these changes, told The Times he hopes the upcoming ONS figures will prompt a rethink. McDonald stated that altering the ILR qualifying period retrospectively is “innately un-British” and would cause “massive upheaval” for those who have already settled in Britain.

  • Labour MPs plan to use new migration data to push for reform reversal.
  • Net migration expected to drop below 200,000, lowest since March 2021.
  • Home Office reforms include extending ILR qualifying period to ten years.
  • Migrants could face longer waits for benefits, housing, and residency.
  • Labour MP Andy McDonald calls retrospective changes “un-British” and “cruel”.

What This Means for Britain

This internal Labour Party pressure highlights a deep division within the ruling party over immigration policy, even as the government attempts to show control over borders.

For ordinary working people, the debate over migration figures and policy changes directly impacts the availability of public services and the integrity of the border system.

The proposed reforms aim to tighten immigration rules, potentially reducing pressure on public services and housing, but face opposition from those concerned about economic impact and fairness to existing migrants.

The expected temporary drop in net migration, as noted by Dr Brindle, suggests that underlying issues driving high migration numbers may not be resolved, potentially leading to future increases.

This situation underscores the ongoing struggle to deliver on promises of controlled borders and reduced immigration, a key concern for many British voters.

  1. Time to put a hold on all inward migration until unemployment levels are drastically lowered with corresponding reduction in benefits bill to tax payers. Net migration figures are a con, provide the public with gross inward and outward migration numbers, gives a better indication of how population of UK is changing. Whole policy is in need of overhaul, setting new requirements for ability to speak/read/write English and suitable qualifications to make new arrivals employable.
