Albanian Smugglers Taunt UK Borders on TikTok Amid Crisis

Albanian people smugglers are openly mocking Britain’s border controls, using TikTok to advertise illegal Channel crossings. An account, ‘Eagles’, has garnered tens of thousands of views with clips ridiculing Britain’s porous borders.

What Happened

One video prominently features former Tory minister Jacob Rees-Mogg. He is heard stating that small boat migrants successfully crossing the Channel are “basically going to be here for life.” Rees-Mogg adds that this chance to remain in Britain is why “people are willing to spend thousands of pounds to risk their lives in small boats.”

This footage was overlaid with an advertisement for journeys from “Calais to Dover” for £2,500. Other clips show Albanian migrants laughing and smiling as they travel to Britain on dinghies. One video used audio saying: “The next station is London Bridge, please mind the gap between the train and the platform.” Another depicted a man with his feet up in a lorry, accompanied by laughter.

The ‘Eagles’ account has since been removed after the Daily Mail reported it to TikTok. This brazen display of contempt for UK border security comes at a critical time.

What They Said

“Illegal migrants are openly laughing at Britain’s non-existent border controls. The message being conveyed is very clear: we are a soft touch.”

— Robert Bates, Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control

“Since the election illegal immigrant numbers crossing the channel are up 45 per cent. People smugglers are now brazenly advertising their services and numbers are set to surge this summer as the weather improves.”

— Chris Philp, Shadow Home Secretary

“This inept Labour government is only removing less than 5 per cent of illegal channel crossers meaning 95 per cent get to stay – accommodated in cushy hotels are taxpayers expense.”

— Chris Philp, Shadow Home Secretary

Why This Matters

The situation highlights a severe failure in border control. Last week saw the arrival of the 200,000th Channel migrant since the crisis began in 2018. This figure is equivalent to the population of a city the size of Norwich. This was once declared a “national emergency” when only a few hundred had made the journey.

Despite the Labour government agreeing to pay France £660 million over three years to curb crossings, the numbers continue to rise. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood committed £500 million for French anti-migrant operations, with another £160 million for new tactics. A previous £500 million deal under the Conservative government saw over 84,000 migrants reach Britain.

One of Labour’s first acts in office was to scrap the Rwanda asylum deal. This policy was designed to deter crossings and save lives. The International Organisation for Migration reports 288 deaths associated with Channel crossings since 2018, including 148 drownings.

What Happens Next

The continued mockery by smugglers and rising migrant numbers suggest current strategies are failing. The Labour government faces intense scrutiny over its inability to secure Britain’s borders. British taxpayers continue to fund both French efforts and the accommodation of those who arrive illegally. This Labour government has lost control of Britain’s borders, leaving the country exposed and the taxpayer burdened.
