Davos Founder Calls for More EU Power as Trump Rattles Global Elite

Summary: Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, says Europe must radically reshape itself to survive a second Trump era. In an interview with The Telegraph, the 87 year old globalist figurehead warned that America’s hard power politics is a wake-up call for the EU. His solution is clear: stronger central authority in Brussels, deeper integration and new supranational structures.

Schwab Says Trump Is a Wake Up Call for Europe

Speaking to The Telegraph, Klaus Schwab admitted this year’s Davos summit felt different. With Donald Trump returning to the global stage, Schwab says the event became dominated by an America first message.

The World Economic Forum founder described Trump’s approach as tough love, warning Britain and Europe they must decide whether to become stronger powers or risk becoming vassal states.

For a man long seen as the ultimate liberal globalist, the tone has shifted. The world is no longer about polite consensus. It is about hard power.

The Plan: More Centralised Europe

Schwab’s answer is not national revival but deeper European integration. He backs proposals for a single powerful EU president to replace the bloc’s current complex leadership structure.

He also suggests creating something akin to a European security council to allow a smaller group of dominant states to take faster decisions on defence and geopolitics.

In simple terms, more power flowing upwards, away from national parliaments and towards Brussels.

Technology, Defence and Breaking US Dependence

Schwab argues Europe remains vulnerable because its financial systems, defence infrastructure and core technologies are dominated by the United States.

His solution is collective European investment in AI, defence systems and strategic industries, rather than individual countries building their own capabilities.

He includes the UK within this broader European economic bloc, suggesting a combined Europe and Canada could rival China and approach American economic scale.

The Fall of the King of Davos

The intervention comes after Schwab’s own dramatic fall from the organisation he founded in 1971. Following internal allegations and mounting criticism, he resigned as chairman of the World Economic Forum last year. The forum later cleared him of wrongdoing.

For decades he was the face of the global elite, championing stakeholder capitalism and international cooperation. His book The Great Reset became a lightning rod for critics who saw it as a blueprint for technocratic global governance.

Now, watching from outside the institution he built, he sees a harsher world taking shape.

The Elephant in the Room

Schwab believes Europe must centralise and integrate further to survive. Many voters across the continent believe the opposite.

For millions in Britain, Brexit was precisely about rejecting rule by distant bureaucracies. The idea that the answer to global instability is even more Brussels power will not land easily.

Trump’s rise has forced a choice. The question is whether Europe responds by becoming more accountable to its citizens, or more insulated from them.
